Whether
you have a carnivorous, omnivorous or vegetarian reptile it may be helpful to
supplement their diets with a reptile vitamin and mineral supplement.
A calcium/phosphorus based mineral supplement is vital to fast growing
reptiles skeletal growth and to prevent osteoporosis, it also helps prevent
softening in turtles' shells. Specially formulated vitamin supplements, some
with vitamin B-12, are used to stimulate the appetite of pets that are not
eating well and give them a quick energy boost if they are lethargic.
Gastric acid in some supplements aids digestion.
Full-spectrum lighting is also important in conjunction with supplements. It is
vital for most reptiles to bask in unfiltered sunlight or under a full-spectrum
light. This light helps them to absorb and utilize the stores of calcium and
phosphorus in their bodies. While most commercial reptile foods are fairly
balanced, depending on your species, you
must also be prepared to buy a variety of healthy vegetables, greens and fruits
and learn to
prepare them to maximize digestion.
For all reptiles, providing appropriate temperatures is extremely important. Being cold-blooded they rely on external temperatures to regulate their body temperature. There are several options for providing heat and the best one(s) for you will depend on your reptile and enclosure.
